Frederick's Story

After graduating from Dondero, I worked as a draftsman at JoHan Models in Detroit and Precision Engineering in Birmingham. In Sept. '65, with the possibility of being drafted into the Army growing stronger every day, I enlisted in the Air Force. (The "Greetings, Neighbor" letter telling me to report for my draft physical arrived at my house a few hours after I had left for induction into the Air Force--how's that for timing?). As of 1 Jan. '90; after 24 years, three months, and nine days of service (that's what my retirement order says); I retired from the Air Force in the rank of Senior Master Sergeant (E-8). I, my Wife Mary, and our two children (Robert and Jennifer) settled in Rantoul, Ill., adjacent to my last duty station, Chanute AFB. (Rantoul is 14 miles NNE of Champaign-Urbana and the Univ. of Illinois, home of the "Fighting Illini.") During my USAF career I was -- an ATC Radar Specialist at McGuire AFB, N.J. and Phu Cat AB, Vietnam -- a Training Manager/Supervisor at Williams AFB, Ariz.; Tainan AB, Taiwan (ROC); Peterson AFB and Ent AFB, Colo.; and the AF Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. -- a Computer Operations Specialist in the NORAD Cheyenne Mountain Combat Operations Center at Colorado Springs, Colo. -- a Faculty Development Instructor at Keesler Technical Training Center, Keelser AFB, Miss. -- a Manpower Management Technician/Superintendent at Keesler AFB, Miss.; Anderson AFB, Guam; and Chanute AFB, Ill. -- awarded the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal twice and the Air Force Commendation Medal three times. Along the ...Expand for more
way in my USAF career I acquired a B.A., Management (Park Univ.), completed 32 hours toward a Master of Public Administration (Univ. of Oklahoma), and received the Academic Award for my class at the Strategic Air Command NCO Academy. From 1990 to 2004 I worked as technical writer, desktop publisher, and editor for several computer software and equipment companies in the Champaign-Urbana area. I set up a resume and desktop publishing company (Randall's Desktop) in 1991 and still operate it. In May '04, I became a REALTOR but wasn't very successful financially; so I became a referral agent in Jan 2009. To stem a significant negative cash flow while a REALTOR, I became a part-time charter bus driver in May 2007 and did that until Aug '09. I then worked as an Imaging Specialist with a company here in Rantoul for a while. I went back into technical writing for a while, working at the Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I'm now working as an assistant to a real estate appraiser, finalizing his reports. He is a fellow Rotarian whom I've known for over 10 years. I became a Freemason in 1982 while in Biloxi, Miss. (Fellowship Lodge No. 630, F. & A. M.). Within a year I became a member of the Gulfport Scottish Rite Consistory and a Shriner with Joppa Temple in Biloxi. Would you believe I was a Shrine clown?). Here in Rantoul, I've twice been Master of Rantoul Lodge No. 470, A. F. & A .M., and have been the Lodge Secretary for over 22 years. I've been a member of the Rotary Club of Rantoul since 1998 and was its president for 2009-10. And... oh, yeah... GO ILLINI!!
